Quantitative Research Prospectus

Instructions

You are required to develop a prospectus (i.e., "mini-proposal") for a quantitative research study in an area and with a topic of interest to you. Please follow the guidelines below: To ensure that your paper aligns appropriately with the expectations—with the scoring rubric—for this assignment, you are required to use the following first- and second-level headings within your paper.

If appropriate, you may utilize additional sub-headings, where appropriate. However, if you do so, be sure that they are formatted according to APA style (see the APA Manual, 7th edition, pp. 47-48). Per APA style, your paper should be formatted in Times New Roman 12-point font and should be double-spaced. Introduction This section should provide a basic introduction to your problem of practice. I

t should be relatively brief, as you will provide more details in subsequent subsections. This will likely be no longer than one or two paragraphs. Research Problem and Problem Statement In this section, you provide a detailed overview of your topic and research problem, including why you see it as a problem that needs to be improved upon. In this section, you will also include an explanation of your personal interest in the problem and a justification explaining the need for the quantitative research study to be conducted on it. Research Questions Provide a basic introduction to the questions that will guide your study. This is followed by the explicit statement of each of your research questions.

You must ensure that they are stated appropriately and that they are also aligned with your research problem, the purpose of your study, and the research methodology you will employ. Literature Review and Background Information Provide the reader with an overview of the information that you will cover in this section. This should be no longer than one paragraph.

Practitioner-Related Information (if appropriate for your topic) In this section, you should provide information related to your problem from a practitioner perspective. This is not the section where you will cite published literature, but rather talk about your problem from personal experiences that you have in trying to deal with it. Scholarly Research In this section, you will cite and briefly summarize published and scholarly research on your topic.

You will likely need to use additional subheadings for subtopics covered in the body of literature. Methodology Provide the reader with an overview of the information that you will cover in this section. This should be no longer than one or two paragraphs. The detailed information regarding your methodology will follow under the subsequent subheadings. Research Plan In this section, you should discuss the research plan or design that you intend to use in your action research study.

This is the appropriate place to describe the specific type of research design that you will employ. You should provide assurance that the research plan is appropriately aligned with the problem of practice and the research questions. You should provide detailed descriptions of any survey instrumentation, interview protocols, and other methods of data collection that you will use.

Data Collection Procedures In this section, you should clearly and in a detailed manner describe the data that you plan to collect. All data and their sources should be clearly described and you should explain in as much detail as is possible specifically how and when you plan to collect these data.

Data Analysis Procedures Provide an overview of the quantitative analysis techniques that you will use to analyze your collected data. You need to make sure that there is alignment between the ultimate results of the analysis and the answers that you hope to obtain to your research questions. Implications for Future Research and Practice In this final section, you should describe how you would anticipate your research contributing to the existing body of literature on this topic, as well as your recommendations for future research and/or changes to practice. References All references that you cite earlier in this paper should be included in this reference list.

Pay very close attention to APA style and formatting guidelines. You will be expected to follow all of these, as per the APA Manual. NOTE 1: Although not a formal part of your paper (i.e., in terms of a section heading), the last item on the rubric addresses the “Quality of Written Report.” Throughout your paper, you are expected to adhere to APA formatting and stylistic guidelines. This includes, but is not limited to, formatting of references (both in-text and in the reference list), punctuation and grammar, formatting for tables and figures, formatting for levels of headings, etc. Coherence, transitions, and word choice will also be considered.

NOTE 2: The recommended page lengths for each of the major sections are as follows: Introduction—approximately 2 pages Literature Review and Background Information—approximately 3 pages Methodology—approximately 3 pages Implications for Future Practice—approximately 1 page References— approximately 1 page The total length of your entire prospectus should be roughly 10 pages—anything less and you are not doing justice to the research process; anything lengthier and this is no longer a “research prospectus,” but rather something resembling a more of a “research proposal.”

Type I Versus Type II Errors

In Chapter 10, you made note of important concepts related to statistical hypothesis testing. What you learned so far is that no test is 100% certain, since we rely on probabilities for experimentation. Although statistical tests are reliable, there are errors that can occur, known as Type I and Type II errors. Type I errors are "False positives" where the null hypothesis is true, but is erroneously rejected (you claim significance when you don't actually have it), whereas Type II errors are "False negatives", where the null hypothesis is false and you erroneously fail to reject it (you have significance in your study which you failed to recognize).

It's critical to understand Type I and Type II errors in the context of real world examples, the differences between the two, along with the consequences of committing both types of errors which you will learn about more in this exercise...

For this assignment you will:

1. View two videos about Type I and Type II errors that are embedded below: "P-values and Type 1 Error" and "Power, Type II error, and Sample Size". You will write 1-2 paragraphs for each video...

2. For the first video, you will make observations about Type I errors where you will discuss what a "p value" is, the significance of the "p value", how you interpret it, and what it tells you about the findings of a study as it relates to Type I errors. You should have about 1-2 paragraphs written about the first video.

3. For the second video, discuss what power is, how it relates to sample size, and how these concepts relate to Type II errors. Why are Type I and Type II errors important to address and what are the consequences of each? You should have about 1-2 paragraphs written for the second video as well.

4. *You should have a total of 2-4 paragraphs for this assignment. Be sure to support your observations with the specific examples that were discussed in the video and you may also support your statements by consulting Chapter 10 of your textbook. *You can complete this assignment by typing your summary directly on a word document (and save and submit as a "doc" or "pdf file"), or write out your responses in your notebook, scan, upload and submit your document as an image (picture file). All file types are supported for this assignment.

Reflection and analysis of Plato Republic Book.

Plato offers a complex conception of Justice, including the ways we ought to seek to incorporate justice into our lives, but they do not speak to the question of how we ought to respond to the experience of injustice, either individually or collectively. How might the text be interpreted to offer an argument about the proper response to the experience of injustice? Is the proper response to injustice different for individuals than it is for collectives? Does responding to injustice require a complete understanding of justice, or can we recognize injustice without knowing precisely what justice is? Is injustice merely the opposite or absence of justice, or is it a phenomenon that should be understood and experienced as distinct from ideals of justice? Rather than trying to 'answer' the prompt, the paper should articulate and defend an original argument or interpretation inspired by your reflections on the prompt.

CJUS 630

One communication technique that is seldom included in a police training program, but one that is often employed, is for an officer to simply lie to achieve a desired goal. For example, consider the officer who tells a potential combative suspect that he needs to place him in handcuffs only temporarily while completing some necessary paperwork, and that he will release him when he's finished. Once the cuffs are secure however, the officer advises the suspect he is in fact under arrest. He lies to avoid a potentially dangerous situation. Another example is the officer who advises an abusive husband that his wife does not wish to file a complaint, a lie, and then attempts to get him to admit that he struck her. Of course, once he does, then the husband is placed under arrest. And finally, consider the hostage-taker who gives up after he is informed by the responding officers that the prosecuting attorney has agreed to charge him only with a minor infraction, again, a lie intended to de-escalate the crisis and effect the safe release of the hostage. The idea of the police lying seems repulsive to some, but to others, especially the police, it is a legitimate method for containing and de-escalating a crisis at times. Is it legal? Absolutely; however, there are limitations on the extent to which the police can lie. The courts have essentially ruled that intrinsic lies, or those lies that misrepresent a person's connection to a crime in order to gain a confession, are acceptable. For example, telling a suspect that his car was observed by a witness at the scene of the crime, even if not true, is an acceptable intrinsic lie. Extrinsic lies, or those lies that may potentially distort a person's ability to make a rational choice about confessing to a crime, are mostly not acceptable. For example, threatening to take a mother's children from her unless she confesses to a crime would likely render the confession inadmissible due to its coercive nature. Some of the relevant court cases on police lying are as follows: Frazier v. Cupp, 394 U.S. 731 (1969). Holland v. McGinnis, 963 F.2d 1044, 1050-51 (7th Cir. 1992). Lynumn v. Illinois, 372 U.S. 528 (1963). Spano v. New York, 360 U.S. 315 (1959). State v. Kelekolio, 849 P.2d 58, 73 (Haw. 1993). United States v. Flemmi, 225 F.3d 78, 84 (1st Cir. 2000). United States v. Rodman, 519 F.2d 1058; 1975 U.S. App. LEXIS 13204 (1st Cir. 1975). Discussion Questions (select one of the following questions and draft a response):

1. Should the police ever resort to the use of lies with vulnerable or mentally ill persons, even if legal and used for the purpose of saving lives?

2. Discuss some ways in which the use of lies by the police could potentially be misused when applied to situations involving the mentally ill or other persons in crisis.

3. Do some basic Internet research on the concept of police “entrapment,” and discuss the differences between entrapment and the legitimate use of lies by the police.

Unit VIII Announcement
The success of an organization depends on working effectively outside the organization with all in the society. You need to ask if the organization members are working appropriately with citizens, the governing body, private and nonprofit groups, the media, etc. We will look at the circumstances that public organizations members face in representing their organizations on the outside and the skills they need to do. What are some of the core skills of external relations? Technical, managerial, and institutional skills are required. Also, in this unit, you will learn information about the new public service. Note that public and nonprofit administrations best serve in certain ways- they are more transparent. The public service continues to reinvent itself. So, what we now have are public organizations and nonprofits that are reinventing and running more like businesses and following the tenets of the “new public management. As a result, they have increased efficiency and financial discipline, streamlined services, held top executives accountable for performance goals, established new processes for measuring and evaluating productivity and effectiveness, identified innovative approaches to solving social problems, and reengineered departmental systems to reflect a strengthened commitment to accountability.

Unit III Case Study • Weight: 10% of course grade • Grading Rubric Instructions You have assumed the head leadership position over a small department within a public sector agency. You have inherited a small but diverse team of employees. Your staff consists of the following individuals: Melanie has been with the organization for close to 10 years and spends much of her day surfing social media sites. She enjoys her job for the perceived job security and benefits but has little interest in pushing herself for additional monetary gain. When confronted about her social media use and lack of a desire to advance herself, she complains that she does not have anyone to “look up to” within the organization. Patrick is the most senior employee. Although he has an excellent record, he is going through a very difficult divorce and is only about one year away from retirement. He has become increasingly preoccupied with these matters. Regardless, having previously served in the military and having worked public service for his entire professional life, he expects much out of himself and has expressed a keen desire to involve himself with your managerial decision-making processes as soon as he is able to sort out some of his home issues. Tom, the newest employee, is fresh out of college. He is young and energetic, although not a week goes by where you do not catch him browsing salary surveys or private sector job listings; nevertheless, he is an overly productive employee, and he confides in you that he is worried that he is producing much more than his salary seems to reflect. He also questions the impact that the organization’s work and his own work, in particular, are actually having on anyone. To complete this assignment, you will need address the components below. • Develop a concise motivation profile on each of the staff members. • Correlate motivational theories to this real-world scenario. • Summarize leadership strategies related to such aspects as work life stages, expected responses to rewards and punishments, and the degree to which followers feel they fit the ideal motivation mold of public sector employees. • Consider how not being mindful of appropriate leadership strategies can be harmful to organizations. Your case study findings and recommendations must be at least two pages in length, be double spaced, and be written in 12-point Times New Roman font.
